Sacoje has been producing bimi in Murcia for 7 years

The Murcian agricultural cooperative Sagrado Corazón de Jesús (Sacoje), based in the Lorca district of La Hoya and a member of the Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives of Murcia (FECOAM) since its inception, has been growing fruit and vegetable products for more than thirty years and has a portfolio with "about 20 references in conventional cultivation and 10 in organic production," said the entity.

However, one that stands out is the bimi, "a new vegetable variety resulting from the natural cross between two species of the same family: broccoli, and a type of oriental cabbage called Kai-lan," say those responsible. This crop is mainly grown in the Region of Murcia. "The name bimi was registered by the seed breeder Sakata, which developed the variety and controls its production and quality standards," said Sacoje.

For seven years, bimi has been marketed in supermarkets and large stores in Spain. The vegetable stands out for its nutritional properties. It contains ten essential nutrients, vegetable fiber, potassium, calcium and phosphorus, as well as zinc, folic acid, antioxidants, proteins and vitamin A and C.

Currently, Sacoje has about 27 partners and annually achieves a turnover of 55 million Euro, with a production volume totaling 35 million kilos. It gives permanent employment to 245 people and reaches almost a thousand when in season.

85% of the cooperative's products are intended for export, reaching the shelves of supermarkets and greengrocers across Europe, mainly in the United Kingdom.
